Santa Cruz de Tenerife. Galería ATC is pleased to announce an exhibition of recent paintings by the artist Maribel Nazco (Los Llanos de Aridane, 1938). The opening will take place on Friday, September 22, from 7 to 9 p.m., at 39 Callao de Lima Street, Santa Cruz de Tenerife, and will remain open to the public until November 10, 2023.
The exhibition consists of 13 works, acrylic on canvas, in different formats, whose motifs are arrows and targets. Isidro Hernández Gutiérrez, curator of TEA Tenerife Espacio de las Artes and author of the exhibition text, explains: “The rounded profiles give way, the diaphanous backgrounds become cloudy… the arrows, previously luminous and graceful in the hands of the hero, now they strike, with certainty, the target of the world.” Certainly, in these recently produced canvases the artist reflects, as in previous series’, her concern for the events of the world.
Maribel Nazco obtained her bachelor's degree from the Faculty of Fine Arts of the ULL in 1980, and her doctorate in Fine Arts with the qualification CUM Laude in 1986, with research on the procedures used in alloying and experimenting with metals. In 1989 she obtained a Professorship in Pictorial Procedures and Techniques at the Faculty of Fine Arts of the ULL, where she assumed several positions of responsibility, serving as Dean for several terms.
From 1985 she abandoned metals and dedicated herself exclusively to painting. That same year, she exhibited at the Círculo de Bellas Artes de Tenerife, and in the nineties renewed her pictorial work, inspired by controversial Icons of the City (1991) with which she developed a work that draws on representation: illusory image of metallic objects, now treated as urban still lifes. In 2012 TEA Tenerife Espacio de las Artes dedicated a retrospective to her. Her latest exhibitions, also retrospective in nature, took place in the exhibition halls of the Government of the Canary Islands (Tenerife and Gran Canaria) during the years 2021 and 2022.
Pinturas recientes (New Works) is her first solo exhibition at Galería ATC and offers us an opportunity to learn about the recent production of Maribel Nazco, who has a very extensive artistic career and is a Canary Islands Prize winner for Fine Arts.
