The three artists in the proposed project bring the influence of the botanic, either through experiment or intention. Karina Beltrán’s methodical small-scale repetitions of patterns and color—grids loosened with drops of water—create visual bouquets. Sema Castro’s floral motifs are set against dark backgrounds, reminiscent of the Flemish paintings that found their way to the Canary Islands. Carlos Matallana’s electric landscapes in oil on canvas seem simultaneously hyper-realistic and hyper-fake. Whether by happenstance or design, the works reflect how our eyes are constantly trained on and trained by nature.
